Spring is just around the corner and I am so ready for it! I even spent the weekend changing over our seasonal decor, bringing in some brighter and lighter colours. With each season, I go through each room and change up the decor a bit, just to make it feel homey. This weekend was all about our living room sitting area. I’m so happy with how it feels so fresh right now and spring-ish.
Our living room is functional. We live in a small townhouse in Canada, so everything needs to have a purpose but also look pretty. That’s how Chris and I compromise. Our ottoman was one of the best purchases I made. I bought it when I started to notice Wendy’s toys taking over our space…I never realized how much stuff a small human accumulates in a short period of time. So we needed some hidden storage and when I found this on Wayfair I knew it would work for us. It has four compartments and you can flip the tops over to reveal trays, which is great when I want to sit on the couch and enjoy a book with my tea.
Right now, two of the four compartments are hiding extra blankets, and board games, while the other two are filled with Wendy toys. She knows that when she wants to play with her Mr. Potato head or extra kitchen accessories, she just lifts one of the tops and has a blast. Don’t worry, we’ve also made it clear that if she makes a mess she needs to clean it up before bedtime, which sometimes takes some extra reminding but she’s only 2 so I get it.
Before Wendy was born, we had some major reno’s done to our house. We pulled up all the carpet and old floors and replaced them with a dark hand-scraped laminate, so with a toddler and large dog, I wanted something to that Wendy and Lady could sit on and be comfortable. Plus I wanted something to warm the space. When I saw this rug online I fell in love with. I love the pattern and it looked comfy so I bought it and it hasn’t disappointed at all. I did need to buy a good carpet cleaner because pets and toddlers…but Amazon had a good one on sale during their last Prime Day so it’s not something I worry about anymore.
When it came to lighting in the room, we get a lot of sunlight through that window, like A LOT. So instead of buying blackout curtains, we opted to buy blinds and white curtains. I love natural sunlight, probably the photographer in me, so I didn’t want to buy curtains that would block that out but Chris wanted to be able to watch television during the day with sun glare. So we found a compromise of sorts. The blinds block out enough light out during his shows and when he’s not watching and I don’t want nosy neighbours looking inside my living room, I raise the blinds but close the curtains. The curtains came from Home Sense and they diffuse the sunlight beautifully. I love it. If you’re looking for similar blinds, we purchased ours at Lowes. They are called Levolor Trim + Go Tatami Light Filtering Natural Shade.
So I have a little bit of a pillow obsession. I love cute and colourful pillows and if I could I would throw them on every sitting or bed surface. So when I decided to update our living room space, I wanted to bring in a fun and spring-ish colour palette. When we were picking out major furniture pieces like our sofa I made sure to pick a good neutral colour that would allow accent colours to shine, that colour, obviously, was gray.
While I was browsing through Chapter’s Indigo for the hundredth time in the last week, I came across some of these lovely pillows/ The florals and bright colours just screamed fresh to me. Plus that pink pillow that says “Happiness looks gorgeous on you” was a must for me. It’s fun and a great reminder to smile and be grateful in the morning.
These were just simple changes that I made to our living room that brought it to life for the spring. If you’re thinking of updating your space in a similar way, I’ve linked a few of the products below for your convenience.
