That’s right, we’re pregnant and this time it’s looking good. YAY!! I’m currently 18 weeks and it has been a little bit of a roller coaster to get here. If any of you remember, Chris and I lost our first last year on February 13, 2016 and the rest of 2015 was such a challenge. If you want to read about our first miscarriage, you can read about it here. After that miscarriage it just felt like such a struggle, I was dealing with a lot of other issues at the same time. I had become so unhealthy and stopped taking care of myself. Trying to pull myself out of the rut I had created for myself was one of the most difficult things I have ever had to do. To be honest, I’m still working on it but I’m a lot better. There were times last year, that I thought I was fighting a losing battle with myself. Focusing on just trying to conceive, throughout 2015, I became pregnant 6 times. We experienced 2 miscarriages and 4 chemical pregnancies. I probably wouldn’t have known about my chemical pregnancies if not for those early pregnancy tests; but my other 2 miscarriages, those were the hardest to deal with. Our first in February at 13 weeks (a missed miscarriage), and our second on November 13, 2015 at 8 weeks. All of my pregnancy losses were heartbreaking and I had begun to wonder if this whole baby thing would ever happen for Chris and I. Then after ringing in the brand new year, months of trying to keep up with my yoga practice, healthy-ish eating habits, and a lot of talk therapy, it happened.
On my way home from work one Friday in January, I had a sudden craving for a burrito bowl from Burrito Boyz. After calling Chris and getting his order, I headed over to fulfil my craving. Then as I was waiting for my order, it dawned on me….I NEVER GET A CRAVING FOR BURRITO ANYTHING! EVER! That’s when the wheels in my head started to turn, I had been so busy recently that I haven’t realized I was almost 2 weeks late. So I grabbed my order and ran my butt to the store to pick up an almighty pee stick. (anyone else think the price of a those pregnancy tests are just outrageous! I mean you pee on it!) I got home and immediately headed into the bathroom. That second line was dark and appeared almost immediately. I couldn’t believe it. I hurried down the stairs, Chris was in the basement, I handed him his burrito and then handed him the stick. It took him a second before a HUGE smile crept across his face.
Soon after founding out, that’s when the pregnancy hit me.
Cravings: During the first few weeks of finding out I was pregnant, all I wanted was a shrimp burrito bowl from Burrito Boyz and chips, sour cream and onion, all Dressed, cheddar, it didn’t matter, I wanted all the chips. Then around week 7, that craving changed to ice cream. I tried my hardest for weeks to ignore that craving, I even tried buying sorbet as a replacement….it didn’t work. At week 10 I caved and bought chocolate chip cookie dough ice and it was glorious!
Aversions: oh man did I learn quickly that this kid doesn’t like some foods. It was a constant battle between eating and eating healthy. Zucchini, absolutely not! Even now, I can’t look at a zucchini without feeling a gag reflex come on. My whole 30 days went right out the window…in a chip bag. I had to make a choice, eat junk or don’t eat at all. Junk it was, and when I say junk I mean more carby foods, like pasta and breads. Lots of bread, especially pretzel bagels from Longo’s.
Belly Button: In
Best Moment: Seeing the little one at the 8 week ultrasound with a heartbeat. We’ve never had an ultrasound go as plan before. Then at the 13 week ultrasound we saw Baby Banks moving and again his/her heartbeat. This was by far the best BEST MOMENT EVER!
Stretch Marks: none so far
Sleep: Up until I hit my 9 week mark, I kept waking up at 2am for absolutely no reason. I would just stare at my ceiling for 2 hours before I had to get up for work. Then that changed and I started waking up at 3am…at least it was an extra hour of sleep.
Baby Bump: My jeans and pants stopped fitting around 7 weeks, I essentially lived in tights and yoga pants for my first trimester. It was super comfortable so I can’t really complain. My baby bump became more noticeable around 12 weeks.
What I miss: My evening glass of Once Upon a Wine and baths.
First Trimester Symptoms: All day nausea, frequent urination, exhaustion (hello 7pm bedtimes), cold/flu/sinus infections (I’ve been fighting off the same cold since Mid-February)
Surprising Symptoms: My dairy allergy has gone away. I’m not sure how but I can now eat an ice cream cone without breaking out or anything.
Looking Forward to: 2nd Trimester Bliss! I could use some more energy and a more defined baby bump that doesn’t look like just bloat. Looking forward to being able to cook healthy foods without gagging.
And that wraps up the first trimester! Stay tuned the 2nd Trimester is coming up quickly!
